What Google Wants You to Do on Your Google Business Profile (so you can rank higher in searches)

What Google Wants You to Do on Your Google Business Profile

I always like to say we have to play the "Google Game" when getting your business to appear in local searches. But the good news is Google likes to give us hints as to what they want from you.

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is your digital storefront, the first impression many potential customers will have of your business. It is often seen before customers see your own website!

Optimizing your GBP is crucial for attracting local customers and boosting your online visibility. But what exactly does Google want you to do? Below are three things Google has made clear they want from your Google Business Profile.

1. Consistent and Comprehensive Information:

Consistency and relevant information are sure ways to build customer trust. Imagine walking into a store where the hours are wrong, the products are mislabeled, and the staff seems unsure of the business's details. You'd likely walk right out, right? The same goes for your Google Business Profile. Google prioritizes accuracy and completeness, and so should you.

  • NAP Consistency: Your Name, Address, and Phone number (NAP) must be identical across all online platforms. Inconsistencies confuse potential customers and hurt your search rankings. Double-check every listing!

  • Tell Your Story with a Detailed Business Description:  Use relevant keywords to describe your products, services, and unique selling points. This helps Google understand your business and match it with relevant searches.

  • Choose the Right Categories: Selecting accurate business categories is essential. It's how Google connects you with the right audience. Think carefully and choose the most specific and relevant options.

  • Keep Your Hours Up to Date: Nobody wants to drive to a closed business. Regularly update your hours, especially during holidays or special events.

  • Link to Your Website: Make absolutely certain that your website URL is correct.

2. Engaging Visual Content:

Capture the attention of potential customers and build that connection with them. In a world of scrolling and swiping, visuals are paramount. High-quality photos and videos can make your Google Business Profile stand out and create a lasting impression.

  • Use High-Quality Photos: Upload professional-looking photos of your storefront, products, services, and team. First impressions matter!

  • Bring Your Business to Life with Videos: Videos allow potential customers to see your business in action. Showcase your products, provide tutorials, or give a behind-the-scenes tour. Google has pushed videos more than ever lately.

  • Keep It Fresh: Regularly update your photos and videos to keep your profile engaging and relevant.

  • Consider 360-Degree Views: If applicable, add 360-degree views of your business to give potential customers a virtual tour.

3. Actively Managing Reviews and Q&A:

Want to build a good online reputation? Reviews and Q&A are powerful tools for building trust and credibility. Actively managing these sections shows customers that you care about their feedback.

  • Respond to Reviews (All of Them!): Whether positive or negative, responding to reviews demonstrates that you value customer feedback.

  • Encourage Reviews: Ask satisfied customers to leave reviews. Provide easy ways for them, such as a direct link to your Google Business Profile through QR codes.

  • Answer Questions Promptly: The Q&A section is a valuable resource for potential customers. Answer questions quickly and thoroughly.

  • Flag Inappropriate Reviews: If a review violates Google's guidelines, flag it for removal.

  • Use Q&A for FAQs: Proactively answer frequently asked questions in the Q&A section to save time and provide helpful information.

By focusing on these three key areas, you can significantly improve your Google Business Profile and attract more local customers. Remember, your GBP is a dynamic tool. Keep it updated, engaging, and informative, and watch your local presence grow!
